Buying loudspeakers for the first time can be daunting.

Your choice is determined by the size of your room and budget. If you have plenty of room than reasonably large full range speakers are preferable, as you will achieve a full and rich sound as near as possible to the original masters. Where space is limited than you will need to think of a Sub woofer system where a small box (woofer) produces the low frequencies and satellite speakers for left and right or in the case of surround sound the front and rear.
Full Range speakers are mostly closed cabinets or ported cabinets. Closed cabinets are sealed and whilst not having as much bass as a ported speaker are more tolerant where they are placed and the speaker cones are better protected at high levels due to the cone excursion being damped by the air being trapped. The ported loudspeaker (which has a tuned port (or tube) tuned to low frequency to emphasise the bass) will need more space to be efficient and does have a small risk of speaker damage at high levels as there is no air damping.
When buying used loudspeakers the cost saving can be huge. There is always a risk one of the speaker units may be damaged but spares are plentiful and cheap. Replacing a loudspeaker is in most cases an easy task.
